Mamelodi Sundowns Secure Eighth Consecutive Premiership Title and Eye CAF Glory

Mamelodi Sundowns have once again underlined their dominance in South African football by securing a record-extending eighth consecutive Betway Premiership title. The Pretoria-based powerhouse, widely known as “Masandawana,” sealed the championship with a convincing 3-0 victory over Chippa United at the Buffalo City Municipality Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Going into the match, Sundowns needed just a single point to be officially crowned champions. However, the defending titleholders produced a performance worthy of champions, making sure there was no doubt about their superiority. The breakthrough came early in the game when Iqraam Rayners found the back of the net in the 11th minute, giving Sundowns the early advantage. The team continued to dominate possession and control the tempo of the match, keeping Chippa United on the back foot.

In the second half, Brazilian forward Arthur Sales extended the lead in the 69th minute with a well-taken finish, before wrapping up the victory with his second goal in the 89th minute, completing a brace and sealing a memorable night for the champions. The result stretched Sundowns’ lead over second-placed Orlando Pirates to 15 points — a gap that is now unbridgeable, with only four matches remaining for the Buccaneers.

This latest triumph adds to Sundowns’ rich history and cements their legacy as the most dominant club in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) era. It also highlights the incredible consistency and ambition of a team that has continued to raise the bar in South African football season after season.

Sundowns will conclude their league campaign with a home fixture against Magesi FC on Sunday, 18 May at 17:30. That match is expected to be a celebratory occasion as the team lifts the trophy in front of their passionate fans at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.

While the domestic title is now in the bag, the season is far from over for Masandawana. The team is preparing for an even bigger challenge — the CAF Champions League final. Under the guidance of head coach Miguel Cardoso, who was appointed in December 2024, Sundowns are not only dominating South African football but also making significant progress on the continental stage.

They will face Egypt’s Pyramids FC in the two-legged final of Africa’s most prestigious club competition. The first leg will take place at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday, 24 May at 15:00, giving Sundowns the chance to make a strong start at home. The return leg is scheduled for Saturday, 1 June in Egypt, kicking off at 19:00 South African time.

Cardoso has brought a renewed sense of discipline, tactical clarity, and belief to the squad, and his leadership has already delivered silverware. With an eye now firmly on continental success, the club will hope to replicate their 2016 CAF Champions League triumph and further elevate their reputation as one of Africa’s elite football institutions.

Stay tuned as this incredible season continues to unfold.
