Farouk Khan Advises Kaizer Chiefs to Avoid Signing Lorch and Mbule

Former Kaizer Chiefs assistant coach Farouk Khan has warned the club against signing Sipho Mbule and Thembinkosi Lorch for the upcoming season, even if they become free agents. While both players are talented, Khan believes they bring off-field issues that could disrupt the team.

Mbule has struggled for game time at Mamelodi Sundowns this season, raising concerns about his form and fitness. On the other hand, Lorch, now playing under coach Rulani Mokwena at Wydad Casablanca, seems to have found his rhythm again. Despite this, Khan remains cautious.

Speaking on the Soccer Beat podcast, Khan emphasized the importance of team harmony over individual talent.

“What’s most important for Chiefs right now is to maintain a strong team spirit,” he said. “I wouldn’t recommend signing Mbule or Lorch—even if they were available on free transfers. Both players are undoubtedly talented, but they come with off-field baggage that could affect their performance and influence others negatively.”

Khan pointed to past experiences as a cautionary tale, specifically referencing the signing of Khama Billiat from Sundowns. While Billiat was an exceptional talent, Khan noted that his personal issues off the pitch created challenges for the club.

“A great team isn’t just made of technically gifted players,” Khan added. “You also need mentally strong, disciplined individuals who won’t be distracted by the nightlife or bad habits. Discipline is key to long-term success.”

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Nasreddine Nabi, who joined the club this season, has already brought in ten new players in an attempt to rebuild the squad. Despite these efforts, Chiefs have struggled to mount a serious challenge for the Betway Premiership title. However, there is still a glimmer of hope. Under Nabi’s leadership, the team has reached its first domestic cup final in six years.

Chiefs are set to face their fierce rivals, Orlando Pirates, in the Nedbank Cup final next month—a high-stakes encounter that could bring long-awaited silverware to the club.

With such crucial fixtures ahead, Khan believes now is not the time to take risks on players whose off-field behavior could compromise the team’s focus and unity.
